Placer Examination Principles and Practice by John H. Wells
This reprint of BLM Technical Bulletin #4 was designed to be used by BLM Mineral Examiners as a guide to properly sampling and evaluating placer deposits. Placer deposits are defined and described, from their original sources, through the weathering of those sources, and the eventual concentration of the heavy minerals into various types of placers. Sampling techniques are covered in detail, including panning, sluices, rockers, dry washers, plus the use of heavy equipment to dig test pits of trenches. Proper drilling procedures are covered in detail. The emphasis is on taking careful samples of a known quantity, then evaluating the sample to determine the actual minable values a claim may have. This book is packed full of diagrams, tables, definitions and other useful information.
