Physically ID Minerals
by James A. Madonna, Ph.D.
The full title of the book is A Prospectors Guide to the Physical and Chemical identification of Mineral. It is a book used by the University of Alaska to teach practical field identification of minerals to prospectors. As such, it focuses on those minerals a prospector will be most interested in. The tests are clear and revolve around a simple chart system that lead you to a proper identification. Physical properties are used to make the initial determination, and then chemical tests using a small number of chemicals are used to verify the identity of the mineral. Test tools and reagents are listed and can be used as the basis for an excellent field test lab. The is an excellent companion video available The Art of Mineral Identification 8" x 11" 57 pages.

Field Guide/Rocks & Minerals
by Frederick H. Pough
The classic in the field. First written in 1953, A Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals has helped countless people learn about and identify rocks and minerals. Complete information on physical properties and identifying characteristics is included. If the book has any fault, it is that the photos included are too nice, showing specimens not likely to be found by the average prospector. Still, the great wealth of information in this book earns it a place on any prospector's bookshelf. Illustrated with hundreds of excellent color photos. 396 pages

1st Guide to Rocks & Minerals
by Frederick H. Pough
A concise guide to more than 250 common gems, ores, and other rocks and minerals. This book is a very high quality, yet inexpensive introduction to mineral collecting. Basic concepts are covered, and virtually every important mineral is described and shown with color photos. While it may act as a good introduction to mineral collecting, the book will be of little use in identifying rocks and minerals in the field. The photos are of museum-class specimens, and the identification properties of each mineral are not listed. Illustrated with hundreds of excellent color photos. 128 pages
