    Default Beach machine

Looking to add a beach machine to my collection, hoping to make it to hawaii later this year as well.
Have pretty much decided to go with whites pi pro as i plan to to spend more time in the water than in the sand. Also kind of steering towards minelabs excailbur as well.I understand i'll be doing some digging with the pi, thats no problem.Have read alot of good things about the excalibur in and out of the water and it sounds pretty attractive. "Steve" just curious if you ever had problems keeping your coil on the bottom, seems the only complaint most have is it wants to come to the surface.Does anyone know if one can order the weighted diver coil or do i really need it? Thxs for any replies Ben

    Hi Ben,

I've pretty much run them all in Hawaii. If I could ever get an Infinium to settle down it would be the way to go but every one I ever used there went crazy. I have an Excalibur and like it, but it does not get the depth. So I keep coming back to the Surf PI. I have only ever used the weighted coil, so can't really say how the unweighted version works.

I keep hoping White's will come out with an underwater TDI. I think it would do great in Hawaii.

The Surf Pro is a great performer. Mine had the weighted coil which was not too heavy to use out of the water. I just sold it as I no longer spend much time in Hawaii.

As far as I know you can not change coils because of the waterproof design.

The Surf PI Pro was discontinued and replaced by the Surf Dual Field. It features the 12" round dual field coil, which means you have both a 12" and inner 4" coil operating at the same time. Plus, a pulse delay control was added. Unfortunately, I do not believe the unit can be ordered with a weighted coil. A post on how to make a ballast for the coil is at http://www.findmall.com/read.php?22,799164 Another fix I like as it is easy at http://www.findmall.com/read.php?22,...67#msg-1267467 Best thing is you can have the coil light for on the beach then weight it for use in the water.

I think the issue is overrated. The coil only floats if you let go of the detector. So instead of sitting on the bottom the unit will float up. This is only a concern if you are underwater. If you are standing in the water, it takes minimal effort to hold the coil down. Easier than holding a heavy coil up!

Steve, Walt thxs for the replies, I had looked at the dual field, did some reading up on it sounded
like everyone still liked the older pi pro better + from what im seeing the price is more in my range anyway.
looks like some machines come with or without the weighted coil. What ever i end up with should be able to make it work
im sure. Thxs for the links on on the coil mods Steve.

    Hi,

If you want a PI Pro, I might be able to get a factory refurbished or used unit. Let me know if you are interested.
