Minelabs SD 2100v2 offers Minelab Super Detector power at an entry level price. And the fact is that some users still prefer the SD 2100v2 over later models because it is the only Minelab SD/GP series detector currently being manufactured with manual ground balance. Many professionals prefer manual ground balance for the same reason that professional photographers prefer cameras with manual adjustments - control. Control over exactly how the unit is ground balanced as opposed to having the machine choose for you how it should be set. The SD 2100v2 also offers the ability to be run in either of two channels, a feature not offered on the GP series detectors. Some users report that running in Channel One only greatly reduces ground noise in extremely mineralized areas while still allowing larger nuggets to be detected.

Details on SD 2100v2 controls (from Instruction Manual):

Rear Panel Controls (end battery connects to)
Power - The Power switch controls the power supply from the battery to the control box. Always switch the detector “Off” before connecting or disconnecting the coil or battery, and when not in use.
Tone - The Tone knob can be adjusted to suit an individuals hearing by changing the pitch of the background threshold tone.
Threshold - The Threshold knob is used to adjust the loudness of background sound. Minelab recommends a soft audible headphone signal which is comfortable to listen to for extended periods.
Battery Low - This LED will start to blink when the battery is low, indicating it is time to recharge the battery.
Tune - The Tune knob is used to lower the effects of electromagnetic interference from sources such as power lines, radio transmitters and other metal detectors. Turn the control in tiny increments to find the setting that provides the quietest operation possible.

Front Panel Controls (end coil connects to)
Balance (Balance 1, Balance 2, Search) - The Balance switch selects the channel used for ground balancing. Selecting Balance 1 puts the unit in Channel 1 which is ground balanced with its own adjust knob. Selecting Balance 2 puts the unit in Channel 2 which is ground balanced with its own adjust knob. Searching is usually done in the center switch position which gives the maximum sensitivity to the greatest range of targets. When detecting in highly noisy ground, the selection of Channel 1 only might improve the stability of the threshold. However, sensitivity to certain types of targets is reduced when using only Channel 1 and is not recommended for normal searching.
The lack of controls on the Minelab SD2100v2 compared to newer models is an advantage of sorts as the machine is very simple to operate. Once set up it will usually require little or no adjustment by the operator. The lack of discrimination removes the temptation to ignore certain targets, insuring that items will not be missed due to incorrect discrimination readings.
