An Interview with Brant Grifka

Summit 1000sdi 151

This past weekend AMDS had a chance to get out and test the new 2005 and a half Summit 1000 sdi 151... Long time customer Brant Grifka got the most time on the sled, Two days ago I drilled him for feedback and here is what he had to say...

1. So I understand you had a chance to get out on SKI-DOOs new Summit 1000sdi 151 this past weekend...

Yes, Alaska Mining and Diving Supply had one available.

2. Do you have a few minutes to answer some questions about your experience?

I have all the time in the world to talk about such a wonderful snowmobile.

3. For the record can you please state your name, in its entirety...

 Brant "Grif" Grifka

4. What kind of snowmobile do you own now and from which outstanding salesmen and dealership did you purchase this weapon?

I currently ride a 2004 Summit X 800 with a 144" track.  I bought it from some young buck at AMDS; Nick Olzenak was his name I believe.  The process was so quick I never really caught it.  He took my money and had someone with a forklift drop it in my truck.

5. And would you call yourself a novice Mr.... or an expert in the snowmobile field?

I have been riding for several years, but I am far from an expert.  I am pretty good with a bow staff though.

6. Tell me about yourself... Do you like quesadillas?

I do enjoy the occasional quesadilla and have been know to have a chimichanga every once and a while.

7. The 1000 SDI, what did you think of the power?

Great Odin's Raven, this thing has some power.  The power is very smooth and linear and the power band is wide and filled with torque.  It did not matter what throttle position you were in, the motor has an endless supply of power and lightning quick throttle response - very impressive!

8. How about the maneuverability of the 151 inch track with such a monster engine package?

I was able to throw it around like my 144.  I thought the longer track would want to push more, but it didn't.  The RT chassis has a very balanced feel and as a result is very nimbly pimbly.  Just kidding, but seriously it is very nimble and easy to ride.

9. This thing must have vibrated your legs right off being such a monstrous 2 stroke, how did you cope with that?

There was less vibration with the 1000 then my 800.  With the ease of starting and quiet idle it was tough to believe I was on a big bore sled.  Maybe the rings are shot on my 800?

10. Really, that's incredible how about sidehilling and carving was that a workout for you?

I do not get a lot of time to make it to the gym during the week, so I normally sculpt my guns while snowmobling on the weekends.  This past weekend was not a workout, the 1000 would carve and sidehill effortlessly.  It could hold a line all day long.

11. At one point in the day pro snowmobiler Justin Wiggers mounted this steed, where did you think he was going?

He shot right through a run the locals know as experts only, if it were a ski run, it would be triple black diamond.  It looked like he continued to accelerate all the way over the top.

12. Are you aware that the waiver you signed to ride this machine is a binding contract and I am going to need your spring fever deposit within 24 hours of this interview...Summit 1000sdi 151

I am currently in the process of pawning some of my roommate's belongings to put together a down payment!

13. Thank you for your time Mr.... Cash, Check, or Charge...

If I buy one my girlfriend will dump me and I will have to live in the same house with the same roommates.  I guess that would kill two birds with one stone...

The overall impression by all was very high, I have resorted to strictly short tracks myself with the introduction of the rev but getting on that 151 1000 was a real treat. I never thought I would see the day that straight out of the box a long track mountain sled could be so powerful and so nimble all in one killer package. I would say this will be the hot ticket for the up coming season...
