ALASKA MINING AND DIVING SUPPLY, INC. FURNISHES SKI-DOO SKANDIC SUPER WIDE-TRACK SNOWMOBILES TO BE USED IN GROOMING TRAIL FOR THE WORLD FAMOUS IDITAROD TRAIL SLED DOG RACE

ANCHORAGE, AK - Alaska Mining and Diving Supply (AMDS) contributes the use of Ski-Doo Skandic Wide-Track and Super Wide-Track snowmobiles to be used by the Iditarod Trial Committee (ITC) in grooming various portions of the Iditarod Trail. Rugged and reliable, these machines offer excellent pulling power and phenomenal deep snow trail breaking performance. The Skandic Super Wide Track has a 24" wide by 156" long track which provides superior traction and maximum snow flotation capabilities essential for pulling the ITC's specialized trail grooming equipment.

Use of the Iditarod Trail as a recreational playground and as an access corridor into more rural parts of Alaska has increased markedly over the years and will continue to do so in the years to come. While heavily traveled, very few sections of the Trail are maintained or groomed. In some areas this can create unacceptable conditions for the canine athletes of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Consequently, to enhance safety and reduce risk of injury to the dog teams and mushers, the ITC is greatly expanding its trail grooming efforts. The Ski-Doo Skandics are the recognized industry leaders in trail breaking and freight hauling snowmobiles and are well suited for their Iditarod Race Trail duties.

The trail groomers have three distinct and essential components. The first component, the leading edge, consists of disks, designed to chop up snow and/or ice. The second component, the box or grader, levels the churned up snow and ice and is actuated with an electric motor. The third component, the packer, is located on the rear of the groomer and compacts the snow. Electronically operated rams allow the operator to independently raise or lower the components while traveling.
